If you’re not always wheeling and dealing within the shipping industry, it’s hard to stay in tune with popular trucking

terms like “LTL.” These three letters can be fairly daunting to someone that is looking for a shipping service. However, Arab Cartage and Agent National is very familiar with the term LTL and we are glad to share our knowledge!

The term LTL represents the initials for the phrase “Less-Than-Truckload.” This is a regularly used method for shipping products and goods. In fact, the vast majority of trucking companies and freight carriers offer both Less-Than-Truckload and Full Truckload (FTL) services.

If clients have a full truckload, this means that one client needs to move an entire truckload of one product. For those clients that have smaller shipments, they can move their products within a truck with other client’s products, meaning they have less than a truckload.

Typically, when clients require LTL shipping services, they do not need a full 48- or 53-foot trailer like a full load requires. This can influence the pricing for LTL shipments. The size of the shipment along with other factors including class, pick up, destination zip codes and fuel cost can also determine the rates for delivering LTL shipments.

Because LTL utilizes smaller carriers such as van trailers and pup trailers that allow two trailers to be moved at once, this method of shipping has proven to be one of the most efficient routes for companies in order to get products moving quickly and often at low cost.
